Rural communities in Ghana face unique challenges such as limited access to services, youth unemployment, and a lack of digital connectivity. But amidst these challenges, there are stories of hope and transformation that inspire us to dream bigger. One such story is that of Adams Mujahid and Nubalanaan Sumaila, participants in Tech Aid for Rural Development (TARD Ghana)’s Rural Entrepreneurship and Connectivity Program (RECP).
Launched in 2018, RECP is designed to equip unemployed youth in underserved rural areas with practical, employable skills. For communities like Tokali in the Wa West District, where Adams and Sumaila live, television and radio are the primary sources of connection to the outside world. However, the lack of trained satellite technicians in these areas means higher service costs, as technicians must travel from urban centers.
Adams and Sumaila’s story began when they joined TARD Ghana’s TV satellite installation training. The program provided them with the technical knowledge, tools, and mentorship to establish their own businesses. Today, they have become trusted service providers, helping to connect their community while earning a sustainable income.

For Adams, the journey has been life-changing. His income from satellite installation has enabled him to fund over 50% of his tuition fees at the Damango Agricultural College, bringing him closer to his dream of becoming an agricultural expert. Sumaila, on the other hand, reflects on the evolving nature of technology and how the skills he learned have opened new opportunities.
Together, Adams and Sumaila complement each other’s strengths, working collaboratively to serve clients more effectively. Their story is a testament to the power of small initiatives to create big impacts.
TARD Ghana’s mission doesn’t stop here. These stories inspire us to reach more young people in rural communities, equipping them with skills to build better futures. To achieve this, we’re seeking partnerships, funding, and other forms of support to scale initiatives like RECP and introduce refresher training to keep skills relevant in an ever-evolving tech landscape.
